Iceland Is Best Explored by Motorhome

Iceland is one of the few places on Earth where the landscape changes dramatically every 30 minutes. Lava fields give way to emerald valleys, black sand beaches stretch toward towering glaciers, and steam rises from hot springs beside the road. The only way to do it justice is to move at your own pace — stopping when something catches your eye, sleeping where the view is best, and waking up somewhere entirely new each morning.

A motorhome rental in Iceland puts all of that freedom in your hands. No hotel check-in times, no airport shuttles, no bags to drag across a car park. Your kitchen, bedroom and living room travel with you.

At Kodiak Campers, we offer a small, carefully maintained fleet of campers and motorhomes for Iceland road trips — from compact camper vans for couples to spacious motorhomes for families. Every vehicle is fully self-contained with a real kitchen, private bathroom and enough storage for all the gear an Iceland adventure demands.

Why Rent a Motorhome for Iceland?

Iceland rewards spontaneity. A motorhome makes it possible.

route

The Ring Road Is Made for It

Iceland's Route 1 is one of the world's great road trips — 1,332 km of tarmac circling the entire island, with pull-offs, viewpoints and campsites at every turn. A motorhome lets you follow the road wherever it leads.

camping

Campsite Network Is Excellent

Iceland has over 170 official campsites, most open from May to September. They are affordable, clean and perfectly spaced for a Ring Road circuit. Nightly fees typically run €15–€25 per vehicle — a fraction of hotel prices.

restaurant

Cook Your Own Food and Save

Restaurant meals in Iceland are expensive. With a fully equipped kitchen on board, you can stock up at a Bónus or Krónan supermarket and prepare your own meals — a family of four can easily cut food costs in half.

schedule

Your Own Timetable

Aurora forecasts update hourly. A seal colony might appear on a beach. The midnight sun stretches evenings into something magical. With a motorhome, you can adjust your day in real time without losing a hotel booking deposit.

Perfect for Families

Kids have their own space to relax, read and sleep. No cramped back seats for hours on end. Our motorhomes' layouts mean even a long driving day feels relaxed, with room to spread out at every stop.

luggage

Carry Everything You Need

Hiking boots, rain gear, camera bags, swim towels, groceries — Iceland requires a lot of kit. Our motorhomes have garage bays and generous overhead storage so nothing has to live in the cab.

Where Will You Go?

Iceland's greatest hits, all reachable in a single Ring Road loop.

Motorhome near Icelandic waterfall

The South Coast

Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss waterfalls, Reynisfjara black sand beach, Sólheimajökull glacier and the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. This stretch of Route 1 alone justifies the entire trip.

The Golden Circle

The classic day-trip from Reykjavik — Þingvellir National Park (the original Icelandic parliament and the visible tectonic rift), Geysir hot springs where Strokkur erupts every 6–8 minutes, and the thundering Gullfoss waterfall. From your motorhome base south of the capital, the full loop takes around six to seven hours.

East Fjords and North Iceland

The Eastfjords (Austurland) are where the Ring Road gets genuinely remote. Deep inlets, small fishing villages and the world's largest puffin colony at Borgarfjörður Eystri. Further north, Mývatn lake and its volcanic surrounds — pseudo-craters, lava caves and the extraordinary Dimmuborgir lava formations — reward slower travellers.

Snæfellsnes Peninsula

Often overlooked on a pure Ring Road itinerary, the Snæfellsnes peninsula in West Iceland packs extraordinary diversity into a small area: the Snæfellsjökull glacier (of Jules Verne fame), Kirkjufell mountain, Djúpalónssandur black beach and Arnarstapi sea caves. A two-day detour from Reykjavik is well worth it.

Practical Information for Your Motorhome Rental

Pickup and Return

We are based in the Greater Reykjavik area (Garðabær), making pickup and return easy from Reykjavik or Keflavik International Airport (KEF). Depending on our schedule, we can deliver the motorhome to Keflavík Airport (KEF) for your arrival or collect it there on your return day — €150 each way. Add it as an extra during booking and we will confirm availability. We recommend scheduling pickup for mid-morning on your arrival day and return in the morning before your departure flight.

Driving in Iceland

Iceland drives on the right. Roads are generally in excellent condition on Route 1 and most numbered roads. F-roads (highland tracks) require a 4×4 and are not permitted in our motorhome — most travellers find they never need them. Watch for single-lane bridges (pull off to the right to yield) and be aware that animals — horses, sheep, even reindeer in the east — may wander onto the road.

Fuel and Costs

Our motorhomes run on diesel. Fuel stations are well spaced on the Ring Road, but in the East Fjords and north the distances between stations can exceed 100 km — plan accordingly. Fuel prices in Iceland are comparable to mainland Europe.

Best Time to Visit

June through August offers the midnight sun, green landscapes and the widest campsite availability. May and September are quieter, often cheaper and can include early or late Northern Lights. Winter motorhome travel is possible with experience but not recommended for first-timers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a special licence to drive a motorhome in Iceland?

No. Our motorhomes are under 3,500 kg and can be driven on a standard car licence (category B) held by any EU/EEA or international driving licence holder. If your licence is not in the Roman alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it.

What insurance is included in the motorhome rental?

All rentals include basic third-party liability insurance. We strongly recommend adding our Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Sand & Ash Protection (SAAP) at the time of booking. Iceland's roads can throw up unexpected hazards — gravel chips, volcanic ash and strong winds — and the CDW significantly reduces your financial exposure in the event of an accident.

How do campsites work in Iceland?

Most Icelandic campsites are registered with the Icelandic Farm Holidays (Ferðafélag Íslands) network. You simply arrive, find a spot and pay at the reception (usually open morning and evening). Booking ahead is only necessary for a handful of very popular sites in peak July. The Tjalda app provides an up-to-date map of all certified campsites across Iceland.

Is free or wild camping allowed in Iceland?

Wild camping in motorhomes is no longer permitted under Icelandic law. You must stay at a registered campsite or on private land with the landowner's permission. Fortunately, the campsite network is dense enough that finding a site within a reasonable distance of wherever you are is rarely a problem.

Can I book the motorhome online and pay with a credit card?

Yes. Our booking system is fully online. You can check availability, select your extras and insurance, and pay securely by credit or debit card. We accept major card providers. A deposit is taken at the time of booking with the balance due before pickup.
